This will explain the concepts of a Master BRN in Papyrus
Overview
There are various situations where a Master BRN is useful.
When a Catalogue item is set of items
An example would be a box set
This box set contains a number of books: The Cat in the Hat,
The Cat in the Hat Comes Back,
Green Eggs and Ham,
The Lorax,
Fox in Socks,
One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish,
Oh, The Places You’ll Go!,
Hop on Pop,
Dr. Seuss’s ABC,
Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book,
If I Ran the Circus,
The Sneetches and Other Stories,
Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories,
Horton Hears a Who,
I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!,
Mr Brown Can Moo! Can You?,
Ten Apples Up on Top,
There’s a Wocket in My Pocket!,
I Wish That I Had Duck Feet,
Wacky Wednesday
Cataloguing the Set
The first step is to Catalogue the Box Set. This becomes the Master BRN
Then using EasyCAT's Copy button, the cataguing record is copied to a new BRN which becomes a Subordinate BRN.
The new BRN would have the same cataloguing records which needs to be changed to one of the box set titles. This new BRN would have a reference to the Master BRN .
In the example above, the Box set Master BRN would have the title A Classic Case of Dr Seuss. It would not contain the number of pages, but rather the number of books. Each copy of this would then have the title, the number of pages, notes etc, changed to the correct details.
Managing the Stock and Ciculation
There are three options managing the stock and therefore the circulation of the set or the items in the set.
Only circulate the whole set
In this option, the Master BRN would have a Stock record consisting of an accession number and barcode.
Each subordinate BRN would not have a Stock record.
The entire set is issued when the Master BRN is issued.
Another good example of this would be a National Geographic Magazine where each article is catalogued as a subordinate BRN.
Only circulate the parts of the set
In this option, the Master BRN would not contain Stock record. Thus it cannot be circulated as a whole.
Each subordinate BRN would have a Stock record uniquely identifying the stock.
Each item can be circulated independently.
Manage the set as independent parts
This is a more complex situation
In this option, the Master BRN would have a Stock record consisting of an accession number and barcode.
Each subordinate BRN would have a Stock record uniquely identifying the stock.
When the Master BRN is issued, all the subordinate stock items of the Master BRN are circulated together with the Master Item if each subordinate item is in stock. When the Master Item is returned, each subordinate item must be scanned to return it. Once all items have been returned, the Master BRN can be returned.
Another example of this could be a game set. When the game is issued, each of the items is issued as well so the member has a record of each item in the game. When the game is returned, each item must be returned to ensure the set it complete.
The Master BRN could be the game CATAN. The subordinate items could be Game Board, Cards, Dice, etc. In some situations each item can be barcoded and others just listed. When returning in Front Desk, each item is either scanned in, or clicked to return it.
The Master BRN is shown in EasyCat
